Fukuoka Airport to Hakata: Comparing the Direct Bus with Shuttle and Subway

Originally published ¡ Korean source last modified

When traveling from Fukuoka Airport’s international terminal to accommodation in Hakata, compare both cost and transfers. The source gives an adult one-way fare of JPY 260 for the free shuttle to the domestic terminal followed by the subway. Nishitetsu’s direct bus from the international terminal costs JPY 400, reduced by JPY 20 to JPY 380 when paying on board with an eligible credit card or transit IC card. The bus arrives at Hakata Station’s Chikushi Exit, so compare the route all the way to your hotel entrance.

The subway does not depart directly from the international terminal

Fukuoka Airport Station connects to the domestic terminal. The original describes international arrivals from South Korea: these passengers first take the free terminal shuttle to the domestic terminal, then the subway. Reading only “about five minutes by subway from the airport to Hakata” can give the wrong impression that a train leaves directly from international arrivals.

For the subway option, separately allow time for immigration, baggage collection, walking to the shuttle stop, waiting and riding, and reaching the subway platform. With large bags or older family members, consider how manageable that transfer is, rather than comparing only the JPY 260 fare.

International arrivals to Hakata: one adult, one way
Option Fare and route What to check before deciding
Free shuttle + subway Free shuttle + JPY 260 subway
International terminal → domestic terminal → subway Hakata Station
Lower cost, but a transfer from shuttle to subway is required
Nishitetsu direct bus JPY 400
JPY 380 with eligible on-board credit-card or transit-IC payment
International stops 6/7 → Hakata Station Chikushi Exit
No domestic-terminal transfer; check road conditions and the walk to your hotel

At the JPY 380 bus fare, the difference from the subway is JPY 120 per adult one way. The table compares only these two routes, excluding child fares, passes, and other bus operators.

The direct bus arrives at Hakata Station’s Chikushi Exit

Nishitetsu’s direct Hakata bus departs from international-terminal stops 6 and 7. From April 26, 2025, its Hakata departure/arrival point changed from Hakata Bus Terminal to Hakata Station Chikushi Exit (筑紫口). Do not simply follow the old bus-terminal location in earlier trip accounts.

Even hotels described as “near Hakata Station” have different entrances and walking routes. Check the actual entrance, not only the hotel name, and compare it with the bus stop or subway exit. At the airport, confirm the operator, destination, and stop as well as hearing “toward Hakata.” The fares compared here are the Nishitetsu direct Hakata route’s conditions in the source.

If you have only cash, prepare before boarding

The source describes the route as operating a fully cashless trial. Official guidance lists transit IC cards such as Suica, ICOCA, and nimoca; contactless Visa, JCB, Mastercard, and American Express; and designated tickets. An overseas-issued card is not automatically guaranteed to work—the original specifically cautions about cards issued in South Korea—so check international contactless-payment capability for your own card.

Traveling from the airport to Hakata, you board at the front and pay as you enter. For cash-only passengers, Nishitetsu normally advises buying an IC card or ticket first. Its FAQ nevertheless says cash may be accepted in unavoidable circumstances after notifying the crew. This is not an absolute cash ban, but arranging payment before boarding is preferable to relying on an exception.

Decide three things before arrival

  1. Check the accommodation entrance: Compare walking from the Chikushi Exit bus stop and from a subway exit on a map.
  2. Choose for your luggage and companions: Consider shuttle plus subway to reduce cost, or the direct bus to avoid changing at the domestic terminal.
  3. Check payment and the onward or return service: Prepare bus payment, and for a late arrival check that date’s shuttle/subway or direct-bus timetable before departure.

A flight’s arrival time is not the time you leave the airport. Allow for arrival formalities and transfers when booking restaurants or onward transport. Neither route guarantees reaching the hotel within a fixed time.

3 Minute Travel’s advice

If another transfer with bags feels difficult and your hotel is near Chikushi Exit, look first at the direct bus. With light luggage and a lower-cost priority, the free shuttle and subway are worth comparing. Rather than choosing one supposedly fastest service, consider the entire route from the airport arrivals hall to the hotel entrance. That makes the first day’s travel clearer.
