Toji (東寺) in Kyoto announced October 31–December 13, 2026 for autumn illumination and special night viewing of the Kondo and Kodo halls. Recorded night admission was JPY 1,000 for adults and high-school students and JPY 500 for junior-high students and younger. Special access to the first level inside the five-story pagoda was a separate daytime program during the same period, so choose visit times according to what you want to see.
Admission until 9 p.m.; viewing until 9:30 p.m.
| Category | Schedule and conditions |
|---|---|
| Period | October 31–December 13; open every day during the period |
| Visiting hours | 6–9:30 p.m., Japan time |
| Admission cutoff | 9 p.m. |
| Adults and high-school students | JPY 1,000 per person |
| Junior-high students and younger | JPY 500 per person |
The illuminated grounds and Kondo and Kodo halls were included at night. The Kodo was to open the north side of the platform holding the statues, allowing viewing of the three-dimensional mandala. Night admission offered no group discount or combination ticket. Do not assume a daytime exhibition or viewing ticket also covers the evening; budget separately. The checked notice did not separately establish free admission for preschool children, so accompanying families would need to ask the temple.
Visit by day to see inside the five-story pagoda
Special access to the first level inside the National Treasure pagoda ran over the same October 31–December 13 period, but its hours were 8 a.m.–5 p.m., with admission until 4:30 p.m. Do not confuse it with the night-viewing areas. For both, check the separate hours and tickets and leave time between daytime viewing and the evening program.
A 15-minute walk from Kyoto Station’s Hachijo Exit
Official access information cited in the source gives 15 minutes or about 1.1 km from JR Kyoto Station’s Hachijo Exit, and ten minutes or about 0.6 km from Kintetsu Toji Station. The address is 京都市南区九条町1番地 as shown. Confirm the Kyoto Station exit first and allow for the walk before the evening admission cutoff.
3 Minute Travel’s advice
For the illumination alone, plan after 6 p.m.; for the pagoda interior, plan to enter before 4:30 p.m. December 13 was the event’s ending date, not a promise of peak foliage. Recheck official operation and prices before visiting, and leave substantial viewing time rather than aiming to arrive just before 9 p.m.
