About 40 minutes by car from Naha Airport is American Village, a cultural and commercial development on former US airfield land returned in 1981, modeled on San Diego’s Seaport Village. For Jamaican flavors in Okinawa, the original account strongly recommends FLEX BAR & GRILL. Distinctive spices and grilled dishes combined with a seaside meal in the American Village area made it a memorable experience.

Jerk chicken
The first order was jerk chicken seasoned with spices brought from Jamaica and cooked on a large grill made from a converted oil drum. Its crisp exterior and moist interior stood out, with a spicy, deep flavor. The balance of spices gave each bite a Jamaican character.
Jerk-chicken taco rice
Next was a fusion of Okinawa’s taco rice and jerk chicken. Spicy chicken, fresh vegetables, and rice worked together, with heat that whetted the appetite and a satisfying range of textures.
Atmosphere and service
The Jamaican-inspired interior and reggae music created a distinctive atmosphere. Being close to the beach meant enjoying a sea view with the meal. Friendly, attentive staff helped make it a comfortable visit.

A beach and park nearby offered places to walk and relax.

FLEX, a Jamaican restaurant beside the sea near American Village.
The cute wooden building looked like something you might find in Jamaica.
A later visit section of the same source says it was open only Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. This conflicts with the fuller schedule above and is preserved as a historical observation, not current opening information.

Inside also felt like a Jamaican restaurant.

Reggae, Jamaica’s musical soul, played throughout.
No Woman, No Cry~

I ordered jerk chicken for JPY 1,200.
It looked rather dry, but only the exterior was dry; the inside was moist and delicious.
The Jamaican spices balanced the richness well.

We also ordered jerk-chicken taco rice, combining Jamaica and Okinawa.
Instead of the usual ground pork, it used finely chopped jerk chicken. The spices and taco-rice flavors worked well together.

In weather that is not too hot, the terrace seemed another good choice.

Above all, I loved having the beautiful sea near American Village right in front of us.
Nearby Western residents had set up hammocks or were camping; it was enjoyable to share something of that relaxed feeling.
