Fukuoka's shopping route changed on September 4, 2026, when Canal City Hakata East Building reopened as a lifestyle wing with 16 stores after closing in May 2023. This was not completion of the new East Building announced in 2023: it renovated and reopened the existing structure. A new mixed-use redevelopment remained under medium- to long-term consideration without a fixed schedule.
JAPAN NOW · FUKUOKA NEW OPEN
Restarting after 3 years and 4 months16 shopping, food and animation venues
Floors 1–3 bring together LOWYA, announced as Japan's largest, and LAKOLE, GLOBAL WORK and coca, announced among their largest in Japan, plus 3COINS+plus, a Kyushu food shop, Hawaiian dining and the Zone8 anime experience. Close to Kushida-jinja-mae Station, it fits between Hakata and Tenjin, but tenant hours, tax-free procedures and content opening dates differ.
Owner Fukuoka Jisho announced a proposed new East Building in March 2023, combining retail, premium rental housing and serviced apartments. Its April 2026 announcement instead said the existing facilities would be used as fully as possible to restart trading first, with the timing and details of later redevelopment still under review. The accurate description is the renovated reopening of the existing East Building . The 2023 plan and the 2026 reopening decision show the change when read together.
The same building, refocused on lifestyle uses
It opened as Canal City Hakata's extension. Its official facility name remains Canal City Hakata East Building in this source.
A future new mixed-use facility was envisaged, but construction, completion and opening dates were not fixed.
It restarted as a Lifestyle Flagship & Experience building, combining shopping, dining and activities.

Official shop information directed visitors to buy Attack on Titan café tickets at the second-floor Zone8 merchandise checkout. Same-day tickets may sell out. A future switch to web reservations was planned without a date announced. Children from birth who are not yet kindergarten age are not admitted. Access, hours and tax-free checks for overseas visitors
These are Canal City's general hours. Tenant pages separately list, for example, Eggs 'n Things at 09:00–21:00 and Zone8 at 10:00–21:00. Check days off and last orders for your visit in facility and service information and individual shop pages. Official transport information sets out walking routes from Hakata and Kushida-jinja-mae stations.
In Canal City's official list checked September 6, 2026, 3COINS+plus is a PIE VAT participant. Travelers meeting official conditions such as short-stay status process that day's purchases at the 10:00–21:30 tax-free counter, subject to a minimum amount and product-combination rules. LOWYA, LAKOLE, GLOBAL WORK, niko and ..., JINS and GOOD MARKET KYUSHU were also listed under PIE VAT; GEAR's JAM, 2nd STREET and OnTime under individual-store tax-free handling. Not all 16 tenants are tax-free shops. Bring your passport and receipts and check the official tax-free conditions first.
The operator's release gave no common table of overseas-card brands accepted by East Building tenants or approval of individual Korean cards. Acceptance of Korean-issued cards at every shop is not guaranteed; the source suggests an alternative card brand and a yen payment method. Separately, Passport Campaign provides Korean information and lists GOOD MARKET KYUSHU's passport-presentation 5% offer. No end date was displayed, but terms may change and it cannot combine with other services, so show it before checkout.

EVERYDAY TRIP Editorial Team's advice
The following itinerary suggestions interpret official operating information. They are not firsthand experiences or operator guarantees.
The second and third floors are available from September 4, but Blue Lock begins September 18. For the full range of anime experiences, later dates make sense. For the Attack on Titan café, first plan a date before December 4 and time to secure a same-day ticket.
LOWYA's large furniture is useful to compare in person, but shipping and baggage can limit taking it home. Start with portable goods and food at 3COINS+plus, LAKOLE and GOOD MARKET KYUSHU, and decide on large products only after checking delivery.
PIE VAT requires a separate same-day counter procedure after payment. Keep receipts together, check departure eligibility and product conditions first, then plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before the listed 21:30 closing time.
Although near Kushida-jinja-mae, visiting 3 large shops plus a meal can take much longer than expected. On departure day, limiting souvenirs and goods on floors 1–2 to 60–90 minutes and leaving Zone8 or dining for another day can reduce baggage and airport-transfer complications.
