LOCAL TASTE
Toyotsune Beppu Main Restaurant (とよ常 別府本店)

Toyotsune's main restaurant is a well-known Beppu lunch spot for both travelers and locals. You may get in without waiting if lucky, but it is popular enough for a line to be normal. The most frequently ordered dish in the account is a tendon set topped with large shrimp tempura. The house specialty dashimaki rolled omelet is ordered separately and makes a good addition. The author considered it good value for a substantial, approachable meal in Beppu.

LOCAL TASTE
Gyoza Kogetsu (ぎょうざ 湖月)

Near Beppu Station, this small gyoza restaurant opened only 3 days a week—Friday, Saturday and Sunday—and for just 5 hours in the original visit record. With only 6 counter seats, it drew lines of locals and visitors. There were just 2 menu choices, gyoza and bottled beer, with freshly made dumplings cooked after ordering. The simple space conveyed local character and Beppu's relaxed atmosphere. It was a memorable place to experience that neighborhood feeling during the trip.

LOCAL TASTE
Udon Jinde (じんで)

I found this local udon shop while looking for something comforting near Beppu Station the morning after drinking. Its signature udon came with plenty of fresh asari clams, combining sea aromas with the fragrance of wheat noodles. The broth tasted clean and deep, and a little shichimi spice brought out more flavor. For me, it was a satisfying bowl to start the following day, rather than a claim of a medical hangover remedy.

Directly in front of Beppu Station's ticket gates, Bungo Chaya was an easy stop for travelers. The station location made it convenient for a quick meal between journeys. Signature choices included a set with Beppu's toriten chicken tempura and a tendon set piled with tempura. Its cozy atmosphere offered a warm meal with local character at the start of a Beppu trip.

Tomonaga Bakery
Founded in 1916, Taisho year 5, Tomonaga Bakery is in Chiyomachi, Beppu. Include it if you would like to visit a long-established neighborhood bakery. For a larger purchase or a particular bread, ask the shop in advance about ordering and reservations. It says it does not accept reservations by Instagram DM and often cannot reply, so sending a message does not confirm an order. Check regular days off and temporary closure notices before leaving.

OFFICIAL GUIDE
Rokusei Matsubara Main Restaurant
At 7-17 Matsubaracho in Beppu, Rokusei makes cold noodles from a mixture of wheat flour, buckwheat flour and starch, with broth using Japanese beef and kelp. The broth combines thick-leaved kombu from Kushiro and Rausu kombu, and the bowl is served with chashu made from Japanese beef shank. The kimchi is also made in-house: cabbage is salted with Okinawan salt, then fermented with Aomori garlic and chili. It is a candidate for someone interested in the ingredients behind a bowl of Beppu cold noodles.
