Okonomiyaki Asakusa Tsurujirล (ใๅฅฝใฟ็ผใ ้ๆฟ็ผใ ๆต ่ใคใๆฌก้)
ย

Asakusa Tsurujirล specializes in okonomiyaki and teppan cooking, a 3-minute walk from Asakusa Station Exit 6. Chicken stock prepared over 3 days and fresh ingredients give its okonomiyaki savory depth and a soft texture. The popular Buta Negitama combines a soft-cooked egg and scallions. Watching the griddle cooking adds to the pleasure of eating it. It is worth considering for a taste of traditional Japanese food on a Tokyo trip.

Sushiei (ๅฏฟๅธๆ )
ย

ย
Asakusa's Sushiei branched from what the original account describes as Ginza's oldest surviving Edomae sushi restaurant. The second-generation owner continues the traditional style at approachable prices. Its refined exterior may look intimidating, but inside a solo diner can sit comfortably at the counter. The recommended choice is omakase, including carefully prepared Edomae specialties such as soy-marinated tuna and kelp-cured white fish. Dinner is a little expensive, so the lunch special is another option.

Oreno Yakiniku Ginza 9-chome (ไฟบใฎ็ผ่ ้ๅบง9ไธ็ฎ)
ย

Oreno Yakiniku in Ginza offered Japanese Black wagyu at reasonable prices in this account. Its popular half-size 12-step Japanese Black wagyu platter, ยฅ18,480, lets diners try 13 cuts. Chateaubriand, the center of the tenderloin, stood out for its melting tenderness. Simple salt is suggested for focusing on the beef's own flavor. It is a 1-minute walk from Shimbashi Station Exit 3.

Kaminarimon Sansada (ไธๅฎ ใใใใ )
ย

ย
The original account describes Asakusa's Kaminarimon Sansada as the origin of Tokyo tendon and Japan's oldest tempura restaurant. Its overflowing shrimp and kakiage rice bowl has the aroma of sesame oil and a rich tentsuyu sauce. Some find the tempura less crisp, but understanding this as its intended style makes the visit more meaningful. It is a place for a meal with a sense of history while sightseeing in Asakusa.

Asakusa Monja Zenya (ๆต ่ใใใใ ใใใ)
ย

ย
Monjayaki is a dish to try in Asakusa and feels made to accompany a drink. Its appearance is not elegant, but the salty, savory flavor is appealing, especially with alcohol. I liked the lack of a seating charge, manageable prices and the option to eat alone. The staff were particularly kind, reflected in the favorable Google Maps comments described in the account.

Zojirushi Shokudo Tokyo (่ฑกๅฐ้ฃๅ ๆฑไบฌๅบ)
ย

ย
On KITTE's fifth floor by Tokyo Station, Zojirushi Shokudo is run by the company known for its elephant-logo rice cookers. The Japanese Black wagyu cutlet set combines rice cooked in different machines, balanced side dishes and beef cutlets for a special meal. Rice and miso soup refills were available, and details throughout the menu used Zojirushi products. Queuing was managed by QR code, so after registering I suggest taking in Tokyo's night view from KITTE's rooftop garden.

Hayashi rice at a Tokyo establishment described as more than 70 years old. The entrance is a little daunting, but inside it is compact, with a modern-classic feel. So this was what proper hayashi rice could taste like.

Unatoto, Asakusa ( ๅฎๅฅใจใจ ๆต

Unatoto, an eel-restaurant chain beside Asakusa Station on the Tobu Skytree Line in Tokyo. ย The account presents Unatoto as inexpensive, quick and tasty, with eel dishes from ยฅ590. Each piece, coated in its special sauce, is charcoal-grilled after ordering. The shop's explanation for the low price was a wish to make eelโdescribed as nutritious and long familiar in Japanโmore affordable. Binchotan charcoal gave it a plump texture and fragrant finish.

Shuko Aomon (้

A 5-minute walk from Gotanda Station on the JR Yamanote Line, this grown-up izakaya puts oily fish such as horse mackerel, mackerel and sardines at the center. Shuko Aomon gathers people who enjoy these fish. Its specialty is fresh horse mackerel fried with a special technique for an exceptionally light texture, described as 'zero weight.' Sashimi and drinking snacks feature fish sent directly from producing areas, with sake and shochu from around Japan and natural wine.

Oniyanma Gotanda (ใใซใใใพ ไบๅ็ฐ)
ย

A 1-minute walk from Gotanda Station, Oniyanma offered udon and tempura at reasonable prices. The recorded hours, 7 a.m. to 3 a.m., suited office workers and visitors alike. Noodles made in the kitchen have a supple, chewy texture served hot or cold. The lightly colored broth has deep flavor. Freshly fried toritenโcrisp, juicy chicken tempuraโwas a popular choice that paired especially well with the udon.

ย
Daikokuya Tempura (ๅคง้ปๅฑ)
ย

The source describes Asakusa's Daikokuya as an establishment with 130 years of tradition, serving Edomae tempura handed down from the Edo period. Tempura fried in fragrant sesame oil is dipped in a sweet-savory sauce for a moist, rich result. After being placed over rice, it is covered and steamed again to bring the bowl together. Those expecting crispness may find it divisive, but it is worth considering for this distinctive style.

Edo Cuisine Sakurada (ๆฑๆธๆ็ ๆซป็ฐ)
ย

Close to Sensoji, Asakusa's landmark temple, Edo Cuisine Sakurada has the atmosphere of an old house. At lunch it offered a reasonably priced signature meal of sukiyaki and donabe rice. This established Asakusa eel specialist takes pride in tender grilled eel. Unaju and unadon combine traditional sauce with careful grilling. Its calm Japanese atmosphere appealed to residents and visitors, while its location near the temple and Kaminarimon made it a convenient sightseeing meal. Its signature patty uses Japanese Black wagyu and a special sauce, with cooking that catches the eye. Orders came with a seasonal smoothie, free rice refills and crunchy chili oil on the table. In summer, barley tea was offered to people queuing outsideโa thoughtful touch. A Shibuya choice for hamburg steak.

Godaime Hanayama Udon, Haneda (ไบไปฃ็ฎ ่ฑๅฑฑใใฉใ ็พฝ็ฐๅบ)
ย

ย
Known for its wide noodles in Ginza, Godaime Hanayama Udon can also be visited at Haneda Airport at the end of a Tokyo trip. I felt the wait was shorter than in Ginza. The reclining tanuki-shaped bowl is oddly cheeky. The bestselling Oni Gozen includes tempura; at ยฅ1,790 it felt expensive for udon. The broad noodles are soft at the surface and increasingly chewy toward the center, an appealing texture. If the Ginza line is too long, Haneda is another option.

This is the second Naminoue entry, following its gyunabe, a predecessor of sukiyaki. I ordered a luxurious raw-beef dish with an Instagram-worthy presentation: lean Hitachi beef shoulder, egg yolk, sea urchin and salmon roe arranged in a Louis Vuitton jewelry box. After photo time, staff arranged it for eating. Wagyu, sea urchin and flowing salmon roe made a delicious combination, pleasing both the eyes and the palate.

Well-known choices include a ham-cutlet sandwich, fruit sandwich and charcoal-grilled toast set. The fried-ham sandwich is satisfyingly indulgent, while the fruit sandwich is hard not to like. The toast set makes a simple breakfast, with pleasantly moist, chewy bread.

Tonkatsu Yamabe, Ueno Label in the Source (ใจใใใคๅฑฑๅฎถ ไธ้ๅบ)
ย

ย
Near Okachimachi Station in the Ueno area, the main shop and branch are about a 5-minute walk apart, so choose the shorter line. The tonkatsu seemed focused on a familiar, traditional taste rather than unusual techniques, and the prices were quite low for Tokyo. The account notes its selection among Tabelog's 100 tonkatsu restaurants. With so many good cutlet places around, that alone did not decide it for me, but it was clean, tasty, straightforward tonkatsu.

Hayashiya, Kawagoe (ใ้ฃไบๅฆ ใใชใ ๆๅฑ ๅท่ถๅบ)

Kawagoe is a quiet sightseeing destination in Saitama, around 40 minutes from Tokyo by limited-express trainโa pleasant break from the city. The original account describes buying a ยฅ700 Seibu Kawagoe Pass in Shinjuku, with a passport required; this is historical pricing and eligibility must be rechecked. From Hon-Kawagoe Station, explore shrines and the old streets. Eel is a local specialty, with many long-established shops. I visited Hayashiya, where Kanto-style eel is steamed once for tenderness. The jo and tokujo unaju differ in the quantity of eel, rather than its flavor.

Near Otsuka Station, 10 former houses were renovated into a retro dining area with 10 distinctive businesses. Choose according to your mood, with grilled eel, yakiniku and many other dishes. Izakaya Hokusai uses fresh, reasonably priced meat from the butcher it operates, offering affordable raw horse meat and beef. Eel-and-wagyu inari sushi made a striking sight. Rocky Kanai's popular rolled omelet is cooked by diners themselves, offering a hands-on Japanese omelet experience. Good-value karaage and raw-beef dishes are other specialties.

Ramen Nakago (ใชใใ)

A 5-minute walk from Akasaka-mitsuke Station, Nakago attracts people who come to the area specifically for its ramen. Watching the noodles being arranged with a comb is part of the appeal. Its pork-bone soup is clear rather than cloudy. Some bowls add dried-sardine stock, combining rich pork broth with a nutty seafood depth. Olive oil, dried-sardine powder and seaweed are provided as toppings to change the flavor along the way.

Katsudon Makes People Happy (ใซใไธผใฏไบบใๅนธใใซใใ)
ย

ย
A 5-minute walk from Akasaka-mitsuke Station, the unusual name drew me in. How good would a katsudon need to be to make that claim? Orders are placed at a machine with an English menu. Its signature Tojinai Katsudon is described in the source as a cutlet spilling beyond the bowl: thick pork is sliced and placed over rice topped with soft egg. The thickness makes it unlike many other katsudon. Adding a raw egg and enjoying it with the yolk is another option in the account.

Tsukishima Monja Moheji
ย

ย
Monjayaki may not be beautiful, but its flavor lingers in the memory. Tsukishima's monja street is a Tokyo food destination with many well-known shops. At popular Moheji, friendly staff cook it on the griddle; even the stock gave it a more polished result than the monja I usually eat. The cooking is fun to watch, and the crisp layer forming against the griddle, toppings and table seasonings offer different combinations. It goes particularly well with beerโperhaps a little too well.

Ivorish SHIBUYA
ย

ย
This 2023 account marks Ivorish's tenth anniversary in June. It says the Fukuoka main shop had closed, leaving Shibuya as a destination for people who remembered its flavor. The Shibuya-only anniversary Napoleon-pie French toast sandwiched custard and cream cheese in brioche, with sweet-tart strawberry and raspberry sauce. A longstanding favorite, Berry Deluxe cost ยฅ2,200 including tax. For the June 2023 anniversary it was renewed with Berry Fit: French toast filled with cream cheese and blueberry jam, 5 fruits, Jersey ice cream, whipped cream and generous raspberry sauce.

KOFFEE MAMEYA Kakeru
ย

ย
I visited this coffee specialist without knowing much about it on a trip soon after the pandemic restrictions eased. At the time of writing, the account described it as popular enough to require reservations. Its unfamiliar coffee omakase included a premium option using competition-winning beans for more than ยฅ8,000. Regular omakase started at ยฅ3,500, with upgrades making around ยฅ5,000 a useful budget in that older account. Coffee enthusiasts reportedly found it moving and gave favorable reviews despite the cost. As someone with limited coffee knowledge, I enjoyed trying unusual coffees and was glad to have gone once. Around 6 cups were served; a nonalcoholic cocktail-style coffee, or mocktail, especially stayed in my memory.

Hamamatsucho Naminoue (ๆตๆพ็บ ใชใฟใฎไธ)
ย

ย
Hamamatsucho Naminoue felt reasonably priced for the food and atmosphere, worth considering for a special day. Several omakase courses were available, but I chose the more approachable gyunabe: a minimum of 2 diners, ยฅ2,750 per person. Cooking at the table was part of the satisfying performance. The account introduces gyunabe as an upscale Edo dish that preceded sukiyaki, noting that Kansai used the soy-sauce base familiar in modern sukiyaki. Fatty beef is first seared in a hot pan; its fat cooks scallions and lean akami beef. Miso, tofu, fuโlabeled wheat bran in the sourceโand fried tofu are then simmered with the scallions and beef. I recommend the ยฅ660 egg rice with the gyunabe: egg is mixed into the remaining miso and fried with the beef for another delicious dish.

Oreno Yakitori, Shibuya (ไฟบใฎใใใจใ ๆธ่ฐท)
ย

ย
The Oreno group, once a talking point in Tokyo for its French food, opened this Shibuya branch on September 10, 2023. It was a 5-minute walk northwest of JR Shibuya Station's Hachiko ticket gate, with counter seating and a live kitchen. The casual yakitori concept combined Japanese and French cooking. The special 3-skewer selection cost ยฅ1,280, a little expensive but unusually substantial. It suited someone seeking distinctive yakitori rather than only low prices. A 5-skewer omakase for ยฅ690 also offered variety and value. I found the order important: eat the 5-skewer set before the special 3, because reversing them made the smaller set less satisfying. Japanese-French dishes included grilled wagyu carpaccio with wasabi tartar sauce, ยฅ1,280, described as the most visually striking dish.

Nikushokudo Yu (่้ฃๅ ใปๅช)
ย

ย
I reached Asakusabashi, 1 station from Asakusa, while looking for an inexpensive hotel, then noticed a small line of apparent locals at Nikushokudo Yu. The hamburg steak came with a hot stone for finishing it, the second time I had encountered this after Fukuoka. Operated by an established meat wholesaler, the shop offered 100% wagyu patties from ยฅ880 for 150 g. There were 6 sauces; scallion-salt was a new flavor for me. Hot and juicy, the steak justified the line. Many food-site comments described the service as unfriendly, and I could understand why, though I found it brusque rather than rude.

Asakusa Gyukatsu (ๆต ่ ็ใใค)
ย

ย
I visited Asakusa Gyukatsu, a beef-cutlet specialist in Asakusa, for dinner after seeing its high Google rating while staying in Kinshicho. Opposite Sensoji, it was easy to find. The account records a Google rating of 4.8 at the time. Gyukatsu is beef fried like a pork cutlet, a popular Japanese dish. The restaurant was on the first basement floor with only 9 seats. Since meals take time, even a short queue could mean a long wait. The main offering was a gyukatsu set with potato salad, cabbage, miso soup and rice. Diners finish the beef on a small griddle; the review advises cooking it through and trying soy sauce or yamawasabi sauce.

Izumo (ๆต ่ๆจช็บ ใใฅใ)

Asakusa and Sensoji's Kaminarimon attract crowds. Asakusa Yokocho added a food-and-festival space gathering festival themes and dishes from around Japan. Yakitori, sushi, pork, Korean food, casual izakaya, eel skewers, retro neighborhood Chinese food, Western-style dishes and kimono rental make it suitable for wandering or bar-hopping even in rain. It was possible to start drinking from lunchtime, 12:00. I visited Izumo, an eel-skewer specialist aiming to make a premium-feeling ingredient easy to enjoy at a bar. Its towering eel-and-egg rice bowl, ใฉ๏ฝใ๏ผใจใใณใใ้ฐป็ไธผ, cost ยฅ2,508 and was a dizzying sight familiar from Japanese Instagram posts.
